Getting Around India

Private vehicle and driver

For city-to-city travel within a region (such as the Golden Triangle or a Rajasthan loop), a private air-conditioned vehicle with an experienced driver is the standard and most comfortable option, and is included in every itinerary on this site.

Domestic flights

For longer jumps between regions — North to South India, for example, or Delhi to Varanasi — a short domestic flight is usually faster and more comfortable than the equivalent road or rail journey.

Trains

India's rail network is extensive and some routes (such as Delhi–Varanasi) can be done by overnight train for travellers who prefer it; we can arrange this as an alternative to flying where relevant.

Road conditions

Highways between major cities are generally in good condition; hill roads (Uttarakhand, Himachal) are winding with lower average speeds, which we account for when timing hill itineraries.
